Valentine Vibes & Simple Steps To Better Health

”The breath is a wonder drug” –T.K.S Desikachar

Happy February to all of you lovely people in our Respira Yoga Community!

Having survived what feels like the longest January ever and with another 5 weeks left before we emerge into spring, its a good time to look at how yoga can enhance your health during these colder, winter months!

Did you know that mindfulness and maintaining a regular winter yoga practice can help boost your immune system? If we don't take time for self-care and to unplug at this time of year, we are inviting colds, flu and bugs to enter our bodies.

There are so many ways in which you can support your own wellness and here are just a few simple steps that you can take.

1) Join a Yoga Class!

Through the practice of yoga we switch ourselves to a more relaxed nervous system which allows our body to focus on restorative functions like cell renewal and the absorption of nutrients. It also helps to stimulate lymphatic drainage and boost the endocrine system. All of this has the effect of supporting our immunity and help us to cope better with illness.

If you'd like to learn more, have a read of this science behind yoga blog.

2) Practice deep & mindful breathing

Simply by sitting still and catching the sound of our breath, we can begin to bring a steadiness and awareness to how we are breathing. Why is this important?  Because the way that we breathe affects our nervous system and stress and vice versa, so it is vital it is for our immune system that we control the breath and reduce stress.

Try this:

Sit up tall or lie down on your back

Set a timer for 3 minutes then close your eyes

Breath in for the slow count of 4

Hold for 2

Exhale for 6

Pause

Repeat until the timer is up.

Open your eyes, and notice the shift in your energy, your focus and how your body feels.

3)  Be Grateful

Close your eyes and think about all of the things that your are grateful for. Send a deep, slow inhale and exhale to each of these things. Don't limit yourself. We can all be grateful for something, no matter what is going on in our lives. Practicing gratitude in this way is a really effective short cut to cultivating present moment awareness.  And when we are in THIS present moment, not mulling over what has passed or feeling anxious about the future, we can feel calm and reduce stress in the mind and body.

4) Join Our Valentine's Mini-Retreat - Sat 17th Feb @ YMCA Harrow.

The perfect Valentines gift for yourself or a loved one in need of pampering and a gentle reminder of the importance of self-care and self-love. Our constantly switched-on way of life can deplete and exhaust us, placing huge strain on the nervous system with all sorts of repercussions for our health. Come along to this gorgeous class and rediscover the incredible response of your body and mind when you surrender into self-love.

This practice is designed to restore the nervous system and help release deeply held tensions from the body and mind. In the super-gentle practice of Yin Yoga, we will use blocks, candles, aromatherapy, organic, flaxseed eye-pillows and blankets to ease into a state of deep support and rest. Space is limited and these events tend to sell out quick, so be sure to book soon! Book here. 4.30-6.30pm at YMCA Roxeth Hill, Harrow £25
