As we prepare to step into the vibrant energy of spring, nature awakens from its winter slumber, and so do we. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is associated with the Wood element, which governs growth, expansion, and renewal.  This is a powerful time to shift our yoga practice to align with the seasonal energy, focusing on Yin Yoga, the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, and the healing power of sound and frequency.

Spring & The Wood Element in Yoga
The Wood element symbolises new beginnings, flexibility, and strength—much like a tree growing toward the sky while remaining deeply rooted.

In our bodies, Wood is connected to the Liver and Gallbladder meridians which regulate the smooth flow of energy (Qi), detoxification, and emotional balance.  When out of harmony, we may feel stuck, frustrated, or experience tension, especially in the hips, sides of the body, and inner thighs.

By incorporating Yin Yoga we can nourish these meridians, release stagnation, and invite fluidity into our physical and emotional being.

Holding yin postures for longer periods (3-5 minutes) allows us to access deep connective tissue and fascia, where energetic blockages may reside.

The Healing Power of Sound & Frequency.
As we move through spring, sound healing can further support our energetic alignment. In TCM, each organ resonates with a specific sound, and the Liver is associated with the “Shhh” sound, which helps release anger and frustration, emotions often linked to this season.

Additionally, sound frequenciessuch as 528 Hz (the “Love Frequency”) and 432 Hz can promote cellular healing, reduce stress, and enhance our connection to the natural rhythms of the Earth.  Incorporating these tones through Tibetan and crystal bowls, tuning forks, or mantra chanting can deepen relaxation and restore balance.

As we align with the renewal energy of spring, we cultivate flexibility, vitality, and a sense of flow, both on and off the mat. May this retreat bring you clarity, expansion, and a deep sense of balance.

Melt into Yin Yoga

In Yin & Restorative yoga, poses are all passive and floor based and we hold for on average 5 minutes, working deep into the joints and harder tissues in the body resulting in better circulation to the joints, ligaments, facia and even the bones.

Suitable for complete beginners, improvers and athletes alike, this unique, one-off class is designed to centre you for the Winter season.

Energetically, yin accesses the internal organs via the meridian lines for the body bringing fresh nourishment and vitality. Meridians are considered channels where Qi or Prana flows. Qi is the basic life force of the body. The thought in Yin is that this brings about better organ health & vitality, stronger immunity & emotional well-being.

Yin is also a deeply meditative practice where we learn to let go of thinking and bring our mind deep inside the body to focus on sensation, aiding a journey of re embodiment that is healing on many levels.

Why Practise Yin Yoga?

Our lifestyles tend to be very Yang. Most of us find it hard to switch off, unplug and be still which can eventually lead to burn out. This can come in the form of a breakdown, illness or injury from which it can take a long time to recover. We are then forced to become more Yin in our approach to life.

But what if instead we regularly checked in with ourselves? By practising Yin & restorative Yoga, we can become more adept and noticing how we really are and actually listening to the signals that our body is trying to send us.  Messages like SLOW DOWN.  SWITCH OFF and take some time for self-care.

How Does Yin Yoga Work?

Yin Yoga opens up the body removing blockages both physically and energetically by blending the 2 ancient practices of Chinese Medicine Meridian systems and Ayurvedic Medicine Yoga poses.

Yin yoga applies moderate stress to the tendons, fascia, ligaments & bones, in order to encourage circulation in the joints and improve flexibility. So, as Yin Yoga goes deeper than simply targeting just the superficial muscles, this practice can create lasting structural change in the body.

What Is Yoga Nidra?

We will wrap up our practice with a long & deeply nourishing Yoga Nidra or "yogic sleep". Yoga Nidra is a powerful antidote to our modern day, stressed out lifestyles where our nervous system tends to be in a constant state of 'fight or flight'. It brings us to that place between sleep and consciousness where deep emotional and physical healing can take place.  It is a fast track way for us to switch over to our "rest and digest" parasympathetic nervous system, which is where healing happens.

By totally resting the nervous system and switching off the mind from its constant noise you are able to find deep peace and joy.

What Is Sound Therapy?

Sound therapy is thought to help with strengthening immunity, reducing physical pain, relieving stress, restoring emotional balance, improving sleep and amplifying creativity.

The vibrations bring healing and therapeutic benefits to the body and the mind.

Sound therapy has been used for a long time to bring healing to the body as disease comes into the body when we are vibrating at a non-optimal frequency.

Scientific research suggests sound therapy prompts damage human DNA strands to repair themselves. The sounds teach the body on a cellular level encouraging integrated healing of the body, mind, and spirit, liberating emotional blockages.
